Uncovering the True Culprit of Infertility: Adhesions

Adhesion formation can cause infertility by gluing down delicate tissues and organs and reducing regular function

Adhesion formation can cause infertility by gluing down delicate tissues and organs and reducing regular function.

For many women, the diagnosis of infertility begins a dedicated search for help, hope and healing. Many causes of infertility go undiagnosed while others are diagnosed as blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, or hydrosalpinx. However, in many cases of infertility, the true culprit comes in the form of tiny internal scars called adhesions.

These adhesions form as the bodies first response in the healing process. As adhesions form, they can attach to delicate tissues and organs creating a strong glue-like bond that restricts movement and regular function. This restriction of function causes infertility when adhesions attach throughout the pelvis and reproductive organs.  Adhesions are a particularly difficult condition because they do not appear on most diagnostic tests. Unless the adhesions are extremely large, doctors cannot know they are there unless directly visualized during surgery.

Generally, treatment for adhesions involves a surgical procedure in which the surgeon cuts or burns the adhesive bonds throughout the abdomen. However, due to the trauma and healing process involved in this procedure, adhesions often reform, sometimes worse than before the surgery.

There is a non-surgical solution for treating adhesions called the Wurn Technique®. This treatment is a hands-on physical therapy that has been successful in treating the following:

One in eight couples is affected by infertility. Faced with the overwhelming emotional and physical stress of trying to conceive, many couples seek alternative treatments after conventional medicine fails.

The Wurn Technique® is one such approach. Developed by Belinda and Larry Wurn, this treatment is based on manually palpatating blockages caused by adhesions in the body, offering a drug and surgery-free treatment for infertility, chronic pain and a long list of pelvic conditions.

Fertility Drugs Increase Thyroid Cancer Risk

Experts Reveal Alternatives to Risky Pharmaceuticals

Women who take the most common fertility drugs, progesterone and clomiphene, are at a greater risk to develop thyroid cancer than those who don’t, according to a study by the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology, Danish Cancer Society.

The 36-year study, which tracked thousands of women, discovered that women who took fertility drugs developed thyroid cancer at an increased rate over those who did not. Compounded with the previously documented risks of multiple births and other complications, many couples have begun seeking natural alternatives to the use of fertility drugs.

“Some new drug-free programs avoid these risks,” said physical therapist Belinda Wurn, who developed a natural fertility treatment with her therapist husband. The treatment, a unique manual therapy, underwent clinical trials, and results have been reported in several medical journals, including Medscape General Medicine Ob/Gyn & Women’s Health.

In the first study, 71 percent of women diagnosed infertile by their doctors an average of five years, became pregnant naturally within one year of receiving the therapy. Most of the women gave birth, and several have had subsequent natural full-term pregnancies. While the total number of participants was small, the results were considered important enough to be published in a major peer-reviewed medical journal.

In another Medscape study, scientists examined the effectiveness of using the therapy before in vitro-fertilization (IVF) in women averaging five years of infertility. Those who had therapy before IVF transfer reported a clinical pregnancy rate of 67 percent. The control group (no therapy) had a 41 percent rate – the national average for clinical pregnancy after embryo transfer according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). Most of the pregnancies in the therapy group reported live births.

A study published in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine showed that therapy opened totally blocked fallopian tubes, a procedure previously thought impossible without surgery. Of the women whose tubes opened (61 percent), most went on to have natural pregnancies and births.

The Wurns, co-authors of Miracle Moms Better Sex Less Pain – The ‘Clear Passage’ Story (www.miraclemoms.net), were initially looking for a cure for pelvic pain when they began seeing unexpected natural pregnancies in women diagnosed infertile. Surprised by their results, they expanded their work to develop a non-pharmaceutical treatment for female infertility. Several of their studies have provided statistically significant results.

After being diagnosed with cervical cancer and undergoing pelvic surgery, Belinda was pronounced cured. A short time later, she began to have a pulling sensation in her pelvis which quickly turned to debilitating pain. As she and her husband searched for an end to her pain, they soon realized that modern medicine was not the answer. Doctors told Belinda that the pain was due to adhesions caused by her surgery, and that the only way to relieve the pain was more surgery which would likely result in more adhesions.

That diagnosis began a 20-year journey of research and testing of a drug-free soft-tissue physical therapy that has been found safe and effective, and is now offered in several clinics in the USA. The treatment they perfected begins with a trained physical therapist locating abnormal tensions in and around the organs, muscles, and support structures of the body. Guided by her experience, precise knowledge of the anatomy and of her patient’s medical history, she applies a specific pressure to adhered areas. This pressure is designed to reduce the adhesions that formed in the body over time, and return the structures to normal mobility, tone, and function.

“Over time, we found that we were helping pain and dysfunctions beyond our original intent and out of the usual scope of physical therapy practice,” said Wurn. “Many of these ‘discoveries’ were uncovered by chance. Patients who came for treatment of chronic pain would often report dramatic improvement in seemingly unrelated areas, such as digestion, elimination, and reproductive or sexual function.”

Naturally Pregnant after Pre-IVF Treatment

By Jackie

Our Pre-IVF treatment is custom-designed to prepare a woman’s body for an upcoming IVF transfer. A fundamental aspect of our treatment philosophy is that we cannot “fix” one part of the body. The entire body works together as a whole and in order to heal one area, we must address the entire body. Because of this approach, many women experience positive “side effects” after therapy, such as decreased pain in the back or increased sexual function. Some women who come for pre-IVF treatment experience a particularly startling side effect: a natural pregnancy.

One such woman was Rachael, who came to our clinic to prepare for her 4th IVF transfer. She and her husband had tried for five years to become pregnant, but because Rachael’s tubes were blocked by severe adhesions, her doctor told them they could only become pregnant through IVF. Unfortunately, they were still unable to become pregnant after three IVF transfers.

Rachael desperately wanted children and researched online for treatments that could boost her chance of a successful transfer. When she found our clinic and came for treatment, our therapists worked to reduce her pelvic adhesions and prepare her entire body for her upcoming transfer.

After treatment, Rachael immediately proceeded with her IVF cycle. Unfortunately, it was not successful. But a few months later, Rachel missed her period. She told us, “I couldn’t even bare to buy another pregnancy test. I finally bought it and to my utter disbelief, it was positive!” Our treatment had opened her tubes, allowing her to become naturally pregnant and later give birth to a healthy baby.

Why was she able to become pregnant naturally, but not successful with her IVF transfer? Sometimes it takes women’s bodies six months or longer to adjust after treatment. Our treatment frees tissues and structures from adhesive bonds that may have been present for years, or even decades. These tissues, structures, and organs may need time to readjust to their mobile state before full function returns. In many cases, women like Rachael feel pressured by the ticking “biological clock” and proceed with other treatment options before their body has time to adjust.

Rachael’s story is not uncommon at CPT. Seven Years Infertile with Two Blocked Fallopian Tubes

By Jackie

“Infertility is a lonely road to walk down,” Sarah told us. She and her husband tried for over five years to become pregnant, “Every time we received a friend’s birth announcement or invitation to a baby shower, we were painfully reminded of our struggles.”

When Sarah sought the help of a reproductive endocrinologist (RE), she learned both of her fallopian tubes were blocked. The RE explained that some of her options included surgery or IVF. But Sarah told us, “I wasn’t comfortable with having surgery and IVF wasn’t an option for us because of personal and financial reasons.”

Sarah and her husband decided to take six months before making any decisions. During this time, they happened to see Clear Passage Therapies (CPT) featured on the news. Sarah decided to attend ten hours of therapy after speaking with her sister, a massage therapist, about the treatment.

Sarah’s treatment went well, but she was still not pregnant after 10 hours of treatment. CPT has a documented history that shows patients are most likely to be successful when they undergo 20 hours of treatment. After speaking with her CPT therapist, Sarah decided to return for an additional 10 hours of treatment.

Once she was finished with treatment, Sarah had another test to check on the status of her fallopian tubes. Sarah reported, “Afterward, the doctor brought in the results and showed me that the dye had gone through my tubes – both of my tubes were clear! Tears of joy ran down my face.”

Sarah and her husband later used Clomid (a drug to boost ovulation) and an IUI (a procedure that places sperm directly in the uterus) to become pregnant. Sarah told us, “After seven agonizing years of infertility, I was finally going to experience pregnancy and parenthood.”

Sarah’s baby girl is now three years old. Her full story, told in her own words, is featured in the Blocked Fallopian Tubes Chapter of our new book Miracle Moms, Better Sex, Less Pain. Miracle Moms contains over 80 patient stories, 100 images, and 700 pages of educational text to guide women through a treatment that can improve female infertility, boost sexual function, and decrease chronic pain.
