Click here to read our chronic pain eBook.

Many people suffer from the debilitating  chronic pain, but there is a natural way to live pain-free. You can read more about this natural treatment by reading our Chronic Pain eBook.

This eBook describes the cause and treatment of adhesions which can cause chronic pain throughout the body. Adhesions are thick fibrous bands of scar tissue that form following a trauma or surgery. These adhesions can attach to delicate tissues and organs causing tightness and pain by acting as an adhesive glue. The Wurn Technique® is a hands-on physical therapy has been shown to decrease pain and increase function by pulling apart these adhesions strand by strand. This allows the body to return to normal function and relieves the stress and pulling on the delicate tissues within the body.

Share this information with someone you know who suffers from chronic pain, and help them find a path to living pain-free.

What is the Wurn Technique ®?

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

By Jackie

When Belinda Wurn found herself in chronic pain after treatment for cervical cancer, she and her husband began taking manual physical therapy classes. They hoped that these classes would teach them techniques that would decrease the pelvic pain and dysfunction Belinda experienced. Sure enough, the techniques helped tremendously and the Wurns continued taking class after class.

As they learned more and became comfortable with the techniques, they began expanding on the techniques and developed new techniques. Through their physical therapy practice, they encountered numerous patients with unexplained pain and dysfunction. They tried different techniques to find and treat their patients’ pain and dysfunction – taking note which techniques were most effective. Over time, they had a compilation of hundreds of different manual physical therapy techniques. They decided to name this compilation the Wurn Technique ®.

Today, anyone who comes to Clear Passage Therapies is treated with the Wurn Technique ®. It is important to know that the Wurn Technique ® is far more than a series of manual physical therapy maneuvers. The Wurn Technique ® employs three key treatment philosophies that set it apart from any other physical therapy:

  • Extensive Patient History Review: The Wurn Technique ® is based on finding areas of previous injury and current restriction, immobility, tightness, pain, and dysfunction. A thorough understanding of a patient’s history is vital to find these areas.
  • Patient Participation: The Wurn Technique ® depends on the input of the patient. The patient’s intuition and experience can provide pivotal clues to the cause of pain and dysfunction. The patient also remains active throughout treatment, guiding the therapist with feedback.
  • Thorough Palpatory Evaluation: In order for therapists to reduce pain and improve function, they must first find areas of tension, restriction, and limited mobility. By thoroughly examining the entire body with their hands (using the Wurn Technique ®), they find these areas.

It is only when these three keys are employed that the Wurn Technique ® can be successful. Visit our website to learn more about our treatment philosophy or why adhesions are the basis of the Wurn Technique ®.

Finding Infertility Treatment Bargains In Tough Economic Times

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

The cost of infertility treatments can quickly add up for couples trying to conceive. New infertility treatment bargains can help couples save cash for when their bundle of joy arrives.

Gainesville, FL (PRWEB) November 12, 2008 — Finding the right infertility treatment is already difficult for many of the seven million US women and their partners diagnosed with infertility. Today’s tough economy can make that task even more challenging.

Treatment is not covered by insurance in most states, leaving many patients overwhelmed with the high costs of medical treatment, surgery, and fertility drugs. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) shows the average price of in vitro fertilization (IVF) is $12,400 per attempt. With a national IVF pregnancy rate of around 30%, several attempts may be required, increasing costs further.

“Several IVF clinics are starting to offer lower cost alternatives, such as a guarantee of success within three attempts or some refund,” said Richard King, MD, a co-author of the upcoming book, Miracle Moms, Better Sex, Less Pain. “Be sure to ask if the program reimburses for fertility medications, which can cost several thousand dollars per cycle.”

“Whether daunted by the high costs, health concerns about surgery or fertility drugs, or by religious beliefs, some couples turn to alternative therapies. “At least three alternative infertility treatments have been shown to improve fertility” according to infertility expert, physical therapist Belinda Wurn and co-author of Miracle Moms, Better Sex, Less Pain.

“Acupuncture, group therapy, and a manual physical therapy (Wurn Technique®) have published peer-reviewed studies showing increased pregnancy rates,” explained Dr. King. Acupuncture increased IVF pregnancy rates when performed 25 minutes before and after embryo transfer, according to a German study published in Fertility and Sterility (2002). Acupuncture sessions generally range from $60 to $100 per session.

In another F&S study (2000), group therapy increased fertility rates. Group therapy can be a real bargain, especially since many organizations and communities offer free sessions.

The Wurn Technique, a manual physical therapy, increased pregnancy rates for women seeking natural conception to 71%. It also increased clinical pregnancy rates for those using IVF to 67%, when used before embryo transfer, according to a study in Medscape General Medicine (2004). The women in the studies averaged five years of infertility before receiving the therapy.

“The Wurn Technique appeals to many women as an infertility treatment because it does not involve drugs or surgery,” Wurn said. “In addition, the treatment costs are significantly less than IVF.”

Wurn developed the therapy with her husband Larry Wurn to help cure her pelvic pain 20 years ago. Wurn states, “I am thrilled that we are now able to offer an affordable infertility treatment that is effective.” Studies and citations on the Wurn Technique® have been published in major medical journals including Fertility and Sterility, Medscape General Medicine, and Contemporary Ob/Gyn.

Study Shows New Therapy Opens Blocked Fallopian Tubes, Returns Fertility Without Surgery

Monday, February 18th, 2008

GAINESVILLE, Florida, February 18, 2008/PRNewswire/ — A study published in Alternative Therapies In Health and Medicine (Feb, 2008) reports that blocked fallopian tubes can be opened without surgery, enabling infertile women to become pregnant naturally.

Authors of the study “Treating Fallopian Tube Occlusion with a Manual Pelvic Physical Therapy,” became curious after a pilot study published in Fertility and Sterility (9/06) showed the treatment returned fertility in women with blocked and swollen tubes.

The non-invasive treatment developed by Clear Passage Therapies® (CPT) involves a unique protocol of manual physical therapy techniques that can be completed at any CPT clinic in one week.

According to the study, CPT’s non-surgical treatment opened tubes in 61% of women with totally blocked fallopian tubes. Without the treatment their chances for pregnancy would have been available only through surgery or in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Of the successful participants, 53% conceived naturally after the non-surgical treatment.

“I was amazed after therapy to learn my only tube was open, and I became pregnant naturally,” said Jennifer Kennedy, a CPT patient. Before therapy, one of her tubes had been removed during emergency surgery, and her remaining tube was totally blocked and swollen. “We wanted a family, but I wanted to avoid more surgery if possible, so I tried CPT. Since therapy, we have since been blessed with three beautiful children – naturally,” said Kennedy.

According to research gynecologist and former Chief of Staff of North Florida Regional Medical Center, Richard King, M.D., “This therapy has shown remarkable results in several areas and is a natural adjunct to gynecologic care.”

Larry Wurn, Clinical Research Director, founded CPT with his wife, Belinda, a physical therapist of 30 years. In 1987, Belinda developed chronic pain after surgery for pelvic cancer. The work they developed relieved her pain. When they used it on patients, women who were diagnosed infertile began having babies naturally.

A surprising side-effect of the work was increased orgasms. Many women reported improved sexual function including increased desire and orgasm, and less intercourse pain after receiving the therapy, according to two other published medical citations (Fertility & Sterility, Medscape General Medicine).

“These initial results are very encouraging,” said the Wurns. “Many physicians are impressed that a non-surgical therapy (Wurn Technique™) can be effective treating pain or infertility.”

New Endometriosis Treatment – No Surgery or Drugs

Thursday, November 2nd, 2006

New Orleans, LA., November 2, 2006/PRNewswire/ — Scientists at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) reported encouraging findings on a new treatment for endometriosis pain using a pelvic physical therapy that feels like a deep massage. Until now, the primary treatments for endometriosis pain have involved either surgery or drugs.

The manual physical therapy (Wurn Technique®) decreased pain throughout the menstrual cycle. Relief continued six weeks after therapy, according to an abstract published in Fertility and Sterility (9/2006). A related abstract in the same issue reported the therapy significantly decreased dyspareunia (intercourse pain) and improved sexual function for women with endometriosis.

“Endometriosis can cause severe pain, disrupt lifestyle and contribute to infertility for millions of women worldwide. Unfortunately, there is no known cure,” said co-author, research gynecologist Richard King, former Chief of Staff of North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida.

Endometriosis is thought to occur in about 10% of adult females, with a higher incidence among infertile women. In an earlier published study (Medscape General Medicine, 6/2004), the therapy improved pregnancy rates for patients undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) and appeared to improve natural fertility rates.

The treatment is of interest because it decreased pain without the risks associated with surgery or pharmaceuticals. The manual therapy “feels similar to a deep massage, but the mechanism is totally different,” according to author, physical therapist Belinda Wurn. “We are encouraged by the results and will expand this study.”

Wurn began developing the treatment with her husband in 1987 to help her recover from painful adhesions following pelvic surgery.  Her spouse and co-author, Larry Wurn says, “The therapy appears to break adhesive crosslinks that form when a patient heals from injury, infection, surgery or inflammation.”

“Adhesions are commonly associated with endometriosis and are implicated in many chronic pain conditions,” explains Dr. King. “This therapy is a natural adjunct to gynecologic care and should be considered by physicians whose patients have endometriosis, dyspareunia, or chronic pain.”

New Moms Thank Complementary Therapies For A Special Mother’s Day

Monday, April 3rd, 2006

Gainesville, FL, April 3, 2006 — Millions of US couples suffer the heartache of infertility every year. Thanks to recent scientific research and the growing awareness of complementary fertility treatments, many women who were once infertile are celebrating this Mother’s Day in the seat of honor.

Sue Carlton, diagnosed infertile due to endometriosis and adhesions, is expecting her first baby this Mother’s Day. She says that the therapies she used with her medical treatments played a big role in her success.

Mother’s Day was one of the most difficult holidays for Lisa Thiesen. But after seven years of infertility and two heart-breaking miscarriages, Lisa and her husband Jeff are celebrating this year with their newborn daughter, thanks to a physical therapy treatment she says helped her become pregnant.

As scientific research grows, even infertility physicians are touting the use of physical therapy and other complementary therapies to assist couples in their quest to conceive. “Initial studies of a new physical therapy technique show promising results, and may benefit fertility specialists and their patients,” says Dr. Mark Kan, Reproductive Endocrinologist of Newport Fertility Center in California.

A study published by WebMD’s Medscape General Medicine showed that women who received a new “hands-on” physical therapy before in-vitro fertilization (IVF) had a 67% pregnancy rate, much higher than the 41% national average used as a control (P < .001). The same journal reported a 72% natural pregnancy rate for women infertile an average of five years before receiving this new therapy (www.clearpassage.com). “It appears to facilitate fertility in women with a wide array of unexplained or adhesion-related infertility,” says Dr. Richard King, Research Gynecologist at the Florida Medical and Research Institute.

Acupuncture, long respected in Eastern medicine, is also being recognized as an adjunct to fertility treatments in the West. Results from a German study showed that the use of acupuncture before IVF embryo transfer greatly enhanced the chance for pregnancy. More recent studies are confirming the role of acupuncture to improve reproductive status. “Acupuncture is used to treat a variety of fertility issues, at almost every age and stage in a woman’s cycle,” says Dr. Randine Lewis, licensed acupuncturist and author of “The Infertility Cure.” “It assists the entire reproductive system in achieving optimal health.”

Mind-body awareness is also on the rise in fertility circles. According to a study published by “Fertility and Sterility,” pregnancy rates for infertile women significantly increased with support group participation. “The tools we work with in our support circles give couples back a sense of control over their lives, and help them turn a crisis into a health enhancing opportunity,” says Julia Indichova, author of “Inconceivable” and creator of the Fertile Heartä Conceptions mind-body program. The program incorporates diet changes, movement, visualization, and other natural remedies.

Many women who have been unsuccessful in their family building efforts through the use of traditional medical techniques often give up hope of ever having a child. Complementary therapies, now bolstered by scientific research, offer a safe and effective adjunct to traditional treatments. For more information see www.clearpassage.com.

Study Shows Increased Orgasms and Decreased Sexual Pain after Manual Physical Therapy Technique

Tuesday, December 14th, 2004

GAINESVILLE, Fla., Dec. 14, 2004 /PRNewswire/ — In a study published today in Medscape General Medicine, Ob/Gyn & Women’s Health, researchers reported that a manual physical therapy technique is highly effective in increasing orgasm intensity and frequency and reducing painful intercourse in women.

The therapy, known as the Wurn Technique(R), is a new, patent-protected series of manual physical therapy and massage techniques designed to reduce adhesions and mechanical factors that cause pain or dysfunction. No drugs or surgery are involved.

Study participants were 23 women who reported painful intercourse and/or difficulty or inability to orgasm. According to the study, the therapy significantly increased orgasm in 56% and reduced intercourse pain in 96% of the women. Statistically significant improvements were noted in all six major areas (desire [libido], arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain) on a standardized test of female sexual dysfunction.

Co-developer Belinda Wurn, PT, says, “Adhesions can form anywhere in the female reproductive tract, decreasing sensation and causing pain. Our therapy frees the tissues from these adhesive constraints, restoring normal function and allowing women to return to a healthy sex life.”

The study is the third to be published on the Wurn Technique(R) in Medscape General Medicine, Ob/Gyn & Women’s Health this year. Two prior studies, published in June, reported the therapy’s effectiveness in helping infertile women to conceive. In the first study, natural pregnancy occurred in 71% of infertile women within one year of treatment. The second study showed that women who used the therapy within 15 months prior to in vitro fertilization (IVF) increased their chances for IVF pregnancy by 63%.
