Combining Conventional Medicine and Alternative Therapies to Resolve Endometriosis-Related Infertility

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Many women with endometriosis are able to become pregnant through conventional treatment methods such as laparoscopic surgery, IUI, and IVF. Other women who do not have success with conventional treatment methods or who are uncomfortable with these options turn to alternative therapies and become pregnant.

But what if you have tried both and have still not experienced success? It may be time to try using conventional and alternative methods in conjunction with each other. Although conventional medicine and alternative therapies often present themselves as mutually exclusive, the combination of the two types of medicine can bring great success.

Endometriosis (the purple cells) and their adhesive attachments (white bands) can lead to infertility

At Clear Passage Therapies (CPT), we strive to prepare the entire body for a pregnancy by addressing mechanical components that may block fallopian tubes, restrict the uterus, and impair hormonal infertility. Our treatment has helped numerous women become pregnant naturally, in addition to preparing over 75 women for successful IVF transfers.

Our treatment for endometriosis works by focusing on the adhesions that form at and around endometrial implants. Adhesions can impair fertility by constricting, blanketing, and pulling on the sensitive female reproductive structures. Adhesions can also pull on the ligaments of the uterus, causing uterine spasm. If a woman undergoes an IVF procedure, the embryo may not successfully implant because of adhesions or the resulting uterine spasm. Similarly, a woman who undergoes laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis may still be unable to conceive afterward because of adhesions present within the reproductive tracts or its ligaments. Because the female reproductive structures can be so delicate, it can be very difficult for a surgeon to remove adhesions from them without compromising the function of those organs.

CPT physical therapists use manual physical therapy techniques to gently break apart the adhesions in and around the reproductive system. The techniques have been shown to help women become pregnant or later have a successful IVF transfer.

One such woman was Samantha, a woman who came to our clinic after several unsuccessful IUIs and two unsuccessful IVF transfers. When Samantha came to CPT, she didn’t know the cause of her infertility. Her therapist examined her and felt that she had the characteristic scarring, tightness, and restriction of a woman with endometriosis. The therapist worked to restore proper mobility and reduce adhesions in her pelvis.

After treatment, Samantha spoke with her doctor and decided to undergo diagnostic surgery for endometriosis. As it turned out, her physical therapist was correct: Samantha was diagnosed with endometriosis. After the procedure, Samantha underwent a fresh IVF transfer and became pregnant right away with twins. Two years after her twins birth, Samantha and her husband tried another round of IVF. They were disappointed when it didn’t work, but were then caught by surprise when Samantha learned she was pregnant naturally.

Samantha reported that she couldn’t attribute the success of her IVF transfer or pregnancy to just one treatment form. For her, it was the combination of conventional medicine and alternative therapies that helped. She told us, “It’s hard to say which treatment ‘worked’ for me. I think a large part of my success was learning to relax. My treatment at Clear Passage enabled me to become more familiar with my body and calm down. I know their treatment helped to restore balance in my body and mind, preparing me for my transfers and natural birth.”

Samantha’s full story, told in her own words, will be featured in our upcoming book Miracle Moms, Better Sex, Less Pain. Miracle Moms contains over 17 chapters and discusses how manual physical therapy can be used exclusively or in combination with other conventional treatment options. Success with First IVF Transfer

“I knew I had only one shot at IVF and we couldn’t afford any other tries.” In today’s struggling economy, comments like this are becoming more and more frequent. Many couples cannot afford infertility treatments or multiple with procedures like IUIs and IVFs.

Ava, a former CPT patient, experienced just this dilemma. After struggling with infertility for two years and experiencing a heartbreaking ectopic pregnancy, she knew IVF was her last option. But Ava knew she and her husband could only afford one try at IVF. She was hesitant to spend their money and told us, “I had never heard of IVF working on the 1st try, so I was discouraged.”

While debating this tough decision, Ava heard of our pre-IVF treatment. She told us, “I had to decide whether to go straight to IVF or spend more money preparing for the cycle with CPT.” Ava ultimately decided to attend treatment at CPT. For an intensive week, our therapists focused on preparing her entire body for a successful IVF transfer.

Ava completed her IVF the month after treatment. “I was thrilled to learn I was pregnant.” She told us, “My pregnancy went smoothly and I now have a beautiful, healthy baby girl.”

Ava’s full story will be featured in our upcoming book, Miracle Moms, Better Sex, Less Pain. To learn more about how our treatment can prepare your body for a successful IVF transfer, please visit our pre-IVF treatment page.

Successful IVF at Age 43

Not all women experience the ideal circumstances to start a family when their “biological clock” is just right. Christine, a former CPT patient, was ready to have children in her early 30s, but as she told us, “Mr. Right was nowhere to be found.” When Christine entered her 40s, she knew she couldn’t wait any longer and immediately started IVF. Her first IVF ended as a chemical pregnancy and she looked for complementary therapies that could increase her chances of a successful second transfer.

She found our treatment and decided to attend. Our therapists designed a Pre-IVF treatment plan to heal and prepare her for her second IVF cycle. Christine told us, “As a previous marathon runner, I had seen plenty of physical therapists, but never with the level of attention and expertise that I received at CPT for my fertility.”

One week after treatment, Christine started her IVF cycle. She successfully became pregnant and later told us, “I had a great pregnancy. I hadn’t felt that good in a while.” At age 44, Christine gave birth to her healthy baby.

Christine’s full story will be featured in our upcoming book, Miracle Moms, Better Sex, Less Pain, along with the stories of 75 other CPT patients. To learn more about our Pre-IVF treatment, please visit our Improving IVF Pregnancy Rates page.

Being Infertile in a Fertile Family

With constant baby showers, baptisms, and birth notices from friends, infertility can be a painful journey for any woman. Women who come from exceptionally fertile families often find that their experience with infertility is especially difficult.

Paulina, a former patient who struggled with infertility, told us, “I never expected to have any problems getting pregnant. My mother had four children and both of my sisters have one son. So as I faced my mid-thirties I kept wondering what was wrong with me, what was wrong with my body, why was this happening to me? I am healthy. I take care of myself. I try to eat right and exercise. Why is getting pregnant so hard?”

Jen, who also struggled with infertility, shared similar sentiments as Paulina and told us, “From an early age, I always knew I wanted children. My grandmother gave birth to 15 children, my mother 4, and my brothers and sister have 7 more kids among them.”

While women like Jen and Paulina may feel that their bodies somehow “failed” them in light of their family’s fertility, at CPT we believe female infertility can result from various experiences such as car accidents, falls, surgery, infections, etc. When these events occur, adhesions and scar tissue form to help the body. However, these adhesions can cause previously mobile structures to become adhered and restricted, thus reducing proper function – such as fertility. At CPT, we manually detach, deform, and reduce adhesions to allow tissues and organs to return to their proper function.

Paulina came to CPT for treatment after experiencing two unsuccessful IVF transfers. After treatment, she became pregnant with a third IVF transfer and delivered twins. Jen, who was denied IVF due to an FSH of 26.2, came for treatment and later became naturally pregnant. After she delivered a healthy girl, she surprised everyone by becoming naturally pregnant again and delivering twins.

Paulina and Jen’s full stories, along with 75 patient stories, will be featured in our upcoming book Miracle Moms, Better Sex, Less Pain. If you would like to read sneak-peaks of stories in the book, please sign-up for our newsletter.

Finding Success after Multiple Unsuccessful IVFs

Many women come to CPT in hopes of increasing their chances of a successful IVF transfer. Some women come before their first IVF and others only find our treatment after an unsuccessful IVF transfer.

Whether you are preparing for your first or fourth IVF, CPT can help prepare your body in multiple ways. Our treatment boosts IVF success by:

  • Increasing blood flow to the ovaries and uterus
  • Improving cervical mobility and ease of transfer
  • Improving receptivity of uterine wall
  • Decreasing adhesions and spasm in the reproductive tract
  • Improving hormonal function
  • Improving whole body function and communication

A medical study published in Medscape General Medicine found that our treatment boosts success rates with IVF from 41% to 67%.

Amelia, a former CPT patient, knew all too well the difficulties of infertility and IVF transfers. After an ectopic pregnancy, she underwent two unsuccessful IVF cycles. She told us, “I felt dejected when it didn’t work the second time. We had long blown through the little bit of money our insurance gave us for infertility treatment. I was frustrated and scared.”

When Amelia’s friend recommended our treatment, she decided to attend our 20 hour treatment program. Three months later, she underwent her 3rd IVF and became pregnant with twins. Now, Amelia’s boys are three years old. She told us, “It’s hard to believe we went through so much to get where we are today. I really learned to keep an open mind and be assertive. After my experience with infertility, I know you really have to listen to yourself and consider all the options.”

Amelia’s full story, along with 75 patient stories, will be featured in our upcoming book, Miracle Moms, Better Sex, Less, Pain. If you would like to receive sneak peaks of these stories, please sign-up for our newsletter.
